I taken a lot of Pix in the last weeks – please tell me when you like them:
Over the years, displaying recipient photographs in the Global Address List (GAL) has been a frequently-requested feature, high on the wish lists of many Exchange folks. Particularly in large organizations or geographically dispersed teams, it's great to be able to put a face to a name for people you've never met or don't frequently have face time with. Employees are commonly photographed when issuing badges/IDs, and many organizations publish the photos on intranets.
There have been questions about workarounds or third-party add-ins for Outlook, and you can also find some sample code on MSDN and elsewhere. A few years ago, an IT person wrote ASP code to make employee photos show up on the intranet based on the Employee ID attribute in Active Directory (AD) – which was imported from the company's LDAP directory. A fun project to satisfy the coder alter-ego of the IT person.
Luckily, you won't need to turn to your alter-ego to do this. Exchange 2010 and Outlook 2010 make this task a snap, with help from AD. AD includes the Picture attribute (we'll refer to it using its ldapDisplayName: thumbnailPhoto) to store thumbnail photos, and you can easily import photos— not the high-res ones from your 20 megapixel digital camera, but small, less-than-10K-ish ones, using Exchange 2010's Import-RecipientDataProperty cmdlet.
The first question most IT folks would want to ask is— What's importing all those photos going to do to the size of my AD database? And how much AD replication traffic will this generate? The cmdlet won't allow you to import a picture larger than 10K. The original picture used in this example was 9K, and you can compress it further to a much smaller size – let's say approximately 2K-2.5K, without any noticeable degradation when displayed at the smaller sizes. If you store user certificates in AD, the 10K or smaller size thumbnail pictures are comparable in size. Storing thumbnails for 10,000 users would take close to 100 Mb, and it's data that doesn't change frequently.
With that out of the way, let's go through the process of adding pictures.
A minor schema change
First stop, the AD Schema. A minor schema modification is required to flip the thumbnailPhoto attribute to make it replicate to the Global Catalog.
- If you haven't registered the Schema MMC snap-in on the server you want to make this change on, go ahead and do so using the following command:
Regsvr32 schmmgmt.dll
- Fire up a MMC console (Start -> Run -> MMC) and add the Schema snap-in
- In the Active Directory Schema snap-in, expand the Attributes node, and then locate the thumbnailPhoto attribute. (The Schema snap-in lists attributes by its ldapDisplayName).
- In the Properties page, select Replicate this attribute to the Global Catalog, and click OK.
Figure 1: Modifying the thumbnailPhoto attribute to replicate it to Global Catalog
Loading pictures into Active Directory
Now you can start uploading pictures to Active Directory using the Import-RecipientDataProperty cmdlet, as shown in this example:
Import-RecipientDataProperty -Identity “Bharat Suneja” -Picture -FileData (]$Get-Content -Path “C:\pictures\BharatSuneja.jpg” -Encoding Byte -ReadCount 0))
To perform a bulk operation you can use Get-Mailbox cmdlet with your choice of filter (or Get-DistributionGroupMember if you want to do this for members of a distribution group), and pipe the mailboxes to a foreach loop. You can also retrieve the user name and path to the thumbnail picture from a CSV/TXT file.
Thumbnails in Outlook 2010
Now, let's fire up Outlook 2010 and take a look what that looks like.
In the Address Book/GAL properties for the recipient
Figure 2: Thumbnail displayed in a recipient's property pages in the GAL
When you receive a message from a user who has the thumbnail populated, it shows up in the message preview.
Figure 3: Thumbnail displayed in a message
While composing a message, the thumbnail also shows up when you hover the mouse on the recipient's name.
Figure 4: Recipient's thumbnail displayed on mouse over when composing a message
There are other locations in Outlook where photos are displayed. For example, in the Account Settings section in the Backstage Help view.
GAL Photos and the Offline Address Book
After you've loaded photos in Active Directory, you'll need to update the Offline Address Book (OAB) for Outlook cached mode clients. This example updates the Default Offline Address Book:
Update-OfflineAddressBook “Default Offline Address Book”
In Exchange 2010, the attributes in an OAB can be customized. This is done using the ConfiguredAttributes property of the OAB (see Set-OfflineAddressBook cmdlet). ConfiguredAttributes is populated with the default set of attributes, and you can modify it to add/remove attributes as required.
By default, thumbnailPhoto is included in the OAB as an Indicator attribute. This means the value of the attribute isn't copied to the OAB— instead, it simply indicates the client should get the value from AD. If an Outlook client (including Outlook Anywhere clients connected to Exchange using HTTPS) can access AD, the thumbnail will be downloaded and displayed. When offline, no thumbnail downloads. Another example of an Indicator attribute is the UmSpokenName.
You can list all attributes included in the default OAB using the following command:
(Get-OfflineAddressBook “Default Offline Address Book”).ConfiguredAttributes
For true offline use, you could modify the ConfiguredAttributes of an OAB to make thumbnailPhoto a Value attribute. After this is done and the OAB updated, the photos are added to the OAB (yes, all 20,000 photos you just uploaded…). Depending on the number of users and sizes of thumbnail photos uploaded, this would add significant bulk to the OAB. Test this scenario thoroughly in a lab environment— chances are you may not want to provide the GAL photo bliss to offline clients in this manner.
To prevent Outlook cached mode clients from displaying thumbnail photos (remember, the photo is not in the OAB— just a pointer to go fetch it from AD), you can remove the thumbnailPhoto attribute from the ConfiguredAttributes property of an OAB using the following command:
$attributes = (Get-OfflineAddressBook “Default Offline Address Book”).ConfiguredAttributes
$attributes.Remove(“thumbnailphoto,Indicator”)
Set-OfflineAddressBook “Default Offline Address Book” -ConfiguredAttributes $attributes

Looks like that some of the wine corks in the photo are made of that corkless stuff. I suppose that is recyclable but I would need to do research. In the meantime I have a container filling up with wine corks of both types. I was planning on using them in some sort of art project.
Our local IKEA takes in small batteries for recycling. I don't shop there very often, but I collect my batteries in a container until I have enough to justify a trip the mouse maze or am shopping nearby.
My San Diego neighborhood has green recycling and takes about every thing except palm fronds and other fibrous plants. City residents can go to the green recycling center and get free mulch and compost.
I second what JScott says, shop greener.
The Alienware M11x is a fascinating modern notebook. May I say that it probably took “out-of-this-world technology” to pack so much power into a little kit? Get it? Because it’s an Alienware. You got? Yes, I know I’m dumb. John tells me that every day. Just click through for the photos, pal. Let’s get on with this.
Anyway, some random Chinese site posted these photos showing that the M11x is very much a human creation. It’s nothing more than a well-engineered notebook, which it should be seeing as the 11-inch notebook has a starting price of $799. [163 via GadgetMix]

GOFA’s board of directors is made up of individuals from both the previously existing Foothills Eagles and Foothills Falcons organizations.
There was recognition from both parties that a merger of the two programs was a needed and positive step for the expansion and long term development of minor football in the Okotoks area.
The new board consists of: George Hassler (president), Bert Huisman (vice-president), Kelly Bennett (treasurer/secretary) and Bryan Brandford, James Hall, Heather Coonfer and Jayson Krause (directors).
The teams will compete in the Calgary Area Minor Football Leagues and will retain the Eagles team name but will have a new look with the introduction of Tennessee Blue in their jersey colours.
“This is an exciting development for football in the Okotoks area,” said Hassler. “Youth football has been a growing and important sport choice for our young athletes in the community over the last 10 years. We also have a tremendous talent pool of coaches, volunteers and parents that are passionate about football and are dedicated to providing a football program that is second to none.”
The success of the Foothills Eagles teams in the past and the recent performance of the Foothills Falcons teams have shown the area has the players, people and coaches in place to develop and maintain competitive programs.
“Under this new organization we are bringing all of that talent pool together, which will only enhance the youth football experience and start a winning tradition immediately that kids will flock to,” said Hassler.
Bert Huisman echoed Hassler.
“This is the most exciting thing that has happened to our town, as far as football is concerned,” Huisman said. “We have put together a talented pool of people from the board of directors down to the coaches and volunteers. I personally have been involved with minor football for a long time and have supported it passionately. It is with great optimism looking forward that we will be a force to be reckoned with in the Calgary area football leagues and within the province,” said Huisman.
He said the combined efforts of both football programs will allow the positive development of all young athletes who wish to attain their personal football goals. Watch for spring camp registration details upcoming in future Western Wheel publications. Ages include; Atom (up to 10 years), Peewee (10-12 years), Bantam (13-15), and Midget (14-18).
At Super Bowl XXXIV, the Pro Football Hall of Fame was announced, and Russ Grimm was among its ranks. Grimm left a legacy in Washington that he carried over into his coaching career. In Canton, Ohio, he will be enshrined as having been a Super Bowl winning guard for the Washington Redskins.
Redskins Hogs
Russ Grimm was born in Scottsdale, Pennsylvania in 1959, and was a third round draft pick of the Washington Redskins in 1981. He would spend his entire career as a guard in D.C. His quintet with Jeff Bostic, Mark May, George Stark and Joe Jacoby became known as the “Hogs” offensive line. Grimm is said to live up to the Hog persona, as he has a strong blue collar appearance.
During his eleven seasons, he played under the tutelage of Joe Gibbs, and helped the team make four Super Bowl appearances. They won three of them. He also made four appearances in the Pro Bowl. He last played for the Redskins in 1991, the game itself a victory over the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXVI.
Bill Cowher Coaching Vacancy
Grimm did not leave the Redskins after retirement. He stayed on to commence his coaching career, first as a tight ends coach and then as the offensive line coach until 2000. He then moved on to the Pittsburgh Steelers where he served as offensive line coach and assistant head coach.
Having been considered for head coaching jobs several times—in Chicago and Pittsburgh respectively—the jobs were ultimately awarded to other candidates. He has since turned down a head coaching interview with the Buffalo Bills. He and Ken Whisenhunt both garnered for Bill Cowher’s head coaching job with the Steelers, which went to Mike Tomlin. When Whisenhunt scored the Arizona Cardinals’ head coaching job, he took Grimm with him.
Keith Alexander: 14 November 1956 – 3 March 2010
Macclesfield Town manager, Keith Alexander has died, aged 53.
Born in Nottingham, Alexander had a playing career spanning nearly two decades as a centre forward most notably for Grimsby Town and Lincoln City.
After temporarily hanging up his boots in 1993, Alexander moved into management when he took charge of Lincoln City, staying for one season before returning to the pitch to play for Mansfield Town and Cliftonville.
Altogether, Alexander made 142 appearances as a player in The Football League scoring a total of 30 goals.
But in 1995, Alexander moved back into the dugout and took the reins at Ilkeston Town and then Northwich Victoria. He then returned to lead Lincoln between 2001 and 2006 – taking the club to four consecutive play-offs.
After brief spells at Peterborough United and Bury – as Director of Football -Alexander settled at Macclesfield in 2008 and steered the Silkmen away from relegation in his first season. His efforts were rewarded with a two-year contract extension in January this year.
Alexander made three appearances for St. Lucia and recently set up the 'Sacred Sports Foundation' on the Caribbean Island with his brother, Delroy and sister, Nova to increase sporting opportunities for St. Lucian children.
Football League Chairman Lord Mawhinney said: “I am shocked and deeply saddened by the death of Keith Alexander. The thoughts of The Football League, its clubs and football supporters everywhere will be with Keith's family and friends.
“He was a tough, dogged competitor as a player and as a Manager and will be greatly missed.”

Oh and by the way he was smuggling weapons
Ynet reports:
Mohammed Nassar, who was an aide to Mabhouh, spoke to Hamas' al-Aqsa radio in Gaza from Damascus. A transcript was released Tuesday.
. . .
Nassar says Mabhouh “never stopped thinking about how to fight the occupation by supplying quality weapons to the Palestinian fighters
(h/t Dolly World)
Ynet continues:
Meanwhile, Dubai's Chief of Police Lt. Gen. Dhahi Khalfan Tamim said he has submitted an official request to the UAE Ministry of Justice to arrest Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Mossad Chief Meir Dagan in relation to the assassination.
Khalfan Tamim said the involvement of Mossad was certain, adding that the decision to submit an international request for the arrest of Netanyahu and Dagan depends on political authorities.
Not really surprising for someone who seemingly believes in Jewish conspiracies. I like Tamim's statement:
He also said he did not believe Israel's prime minister would be arrested as a result, but emphasized that “whoever gave the order for the assassination is a murderer.”
And whoever protects a terrorist smuggling arms is a terrorist too. That would make the assassination, if committed by Israel, a legitimate killing not murder.
One further observation. The New York Times focused on the Dubai police and provides some interesting details, but as Elder of Ziyon observed, remained silent about the blatant antisemitism expresses by police chief Tamim.

German giant FC Bayern Munich has become the first major European club to unveil its 2010/11 home kit. The new adidas retro-inspired strip takes the form of Bayern’s 110th Anniversary kit. It will be available to club fans in May 3rd, 2010.
According the Bayern Munch website:
The red-and-white striped design harks back to a former glorious era, so that Mark van Bommel & Co’s heroic performances will now visually resemble the derring-do of the greats such as Franz Beckenbauer, Uli Hoeneß, Gerd Müller and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. The slogan Legenden und Loyalität (legends and loyalty) and a depiction of all-time leading scorer Gerd Müller is woven into the collar. On the occasion of Bayern’ 110th anniversary on 27 February 2010, the motto succinctly embodies the core components of the club’s long and successful history.
The design elements draw on the past, but the kit itself features state-of-the-art materials. In a radical departure from conventional shirts, and in a first for the Bundesliga, the jersey boasts special body-fit properties thanks to proprietary adidas TECHFit™ PowerWEB technology. The fabric is shaped to be tight to the skin, improving blood flow to the muscles. Integrated thermo-polyurethane elements store the kinetic energy generated by the body.
“The new kit expresses the special affinity between the players and the fans,” commented FCB vice-captain Philipp Lahm. “Legends only grow out of shared values and a will to succeed, just as at Bayern.”

Football is a sport deeply embedded in American sporting culture. I am not referring to soccer of course. What I am referring to is American Football. It has continually influence the lives of many insofar as their sporting lives are concerned. This is so since football is a very fascinating game. It is fast moving, fun and sometimes painful to watch, especially when players tackle each other. And while some may refer to it as a bit rough, it nevertheless has some grace to it, which if appreciated in the right manner, might seem polished. To say however that it is as graceful as ballet for example, would be pushing it.American football is a tough sport. This is characterized by the sport in that, to be an effective football player, one should have the right size so that they may be able to compete properly with other players. This is not to say of course that all football players are huge. There are also a few exceptions. And one of them is Doug Flutie. This rather short man, having American Football as basis, grew to be one of the greatest quarterbacks in football. But the highlight of his career was when he was in college.College football as differentiated with pro football is faster, and more aggressive. This is evidenced by the fact that players in it are younger compared to that of pro football. But when we are talking about the play that takes place between these leagues, there is no doubt that the plays being executed in pro football is more refined and polished. Also, players in pro football are more mature when it comes to the execution of plays and also of filling in their roles. Such that pro football is a different level compared to that of college football. With the love of football deeply embedded in American culture, what follows it, like any other sports, are betting on the game. Betting in sports happen even if what is concerned is college sports. And in this case, college football. According to those who love to gamble, by betting on sports, it makes the game more interesting. It makes it more fascinating. People who often bet on college football experience the kind of thrill that other people who are not betting don’t feel. This is because they have their money on the line and by having it on the line, there will be a different thrill on it.But you should be careful in placing your bets, you should ask help in determining your chances of winning. This is important since heavy gamblers often place bet “above of the ordinary” amount. Espn College Football Picks can help you. One place wherein there are advices are Espn College Football Picks. Espn College Football Picks is a good way to educate yourself for smart betting. Espn College Football Picks will help you determine your chances of winning. It is for this reason that you should try to look at Espn College Football Picks.By: Chris Grisham

The University of Toledo announced its 2010 football schedule yesterday, and the slate includes six home games and six road contests.
The home game highlights include contests vs. Arizona Friday, Sept. 3 (ESPN), a Homecoming match-up vs. Wyoming Saturday, Oct. 2, and a battle with rival Bowling Green Wednesday, Nov. 17 (ESPN2 or ESPNU).
Toledo’s other three games in the Glass Bowl are vs. Kent State (Oct. 16), Ball State (Oct. 23) and Central Michigan (Nov. 26).
The Rockets will travel to Purdue (Sept. 25) and Boise State (Oct. 9) for their remaining non-conference battles. The four road games vs. Mid-American Conference foes are at Ohio (Sept. 11), Western Michigan (Sept. 18), Eastern Michigan (Oct. 30) and Northern Illinois (Nov. 9 on ESPN2).
“Seven schools on our schedule played in bowl games last year, so it is clearly one of the most difficult schedules in the history of our program,” said Head Coach Tim Beckman. “But I know our players and coaches are excited for the challenge. The non-conference schedule will really give us a chance to measure our progress as a football team. We’re looking forward to hosting Arizona on national TV in the opening weekend of college football, as well as playing programs from around the country like Boise State, Purdue and Wyoming. I also think it’s a big plus that we could have as many as four regular season games on national TV.”
The bowl teams on Toledo’s schedule include Boise State (14-0 in 2009), Arizona (8-5), Wyoming (7-6), Central Michigan (12-2), Ohio (9-5), Northern Illinois (7-6) and Bowling Green (7-6).
The Arizona game is the latest in a string of high-profile home contests for the Rocket football program. Recent non-conference opponents to have played in the Glass Bowl include Colorado (2009), Fresno State (2008), Purdue (2007), Iowa State (2007), Kansas (2006), Pittsburgh (2003) and Minnesota (2001). Toledo also served as the host school vs. Ohio State at Cleveland Browns Stadium in 2009.
Future home match-ups will include Boise State (2011), Navy (2013), Missouri (2014) and Iowa State (2015).

And the green-and-gold scarves which have come to symbolise United fans' hatred of Old Trafford's ruling Glazer dynasty may soon be recognised as the currency of a club falling behind their continental competitors.
Barcelona's success on the pitch – including a Champions League, Copa del Rey and La Liga treble – sent their annual income soaring £53m and Alan Switzer, director of Deloitte's sports business group, warned: “Real Madrid and Barcelona have created a clear revenue gap between themselves and their main competitors.
“They look set to contest the top two positions in the money league for the foreseeable future, particularly if the pound doesn't strengthen against the euro.”
And Dan Jones, a partner in Deloitte's sports business group, added: “Just like it was in Rome last May, Barcelona just proved too strong for United. Like other English clubs, United were impacted by the continued depreciation of sterling – and the scale of this is shown by the fact that, if exchange rates remained at their June 2007 level, they would be top of the money league table.”
Arsenal return to the top five after seven per cent increase in revenue to £224m, despite the Gunners' five-year wait for a trophy, edging out serial Champions League nearly-men Chelsea.
Despite United and Liverpool's empires being built on a substrata of debt, and Chelsea turning massive financial losses into “equity,” Jones believes leading English clubs are still well-placed to survive.
With a new £1 billion TV deal kicking in, Jones said: “While there has been much recent comment on the finances of English clubs, we believe problems are experienced at the very highest level are more likely to be a result of mismanagement, weak cost control or a lack of credit than any problems with revenue generation.”
Real, whose new class of galacticos include £80m Cristiano Ronaldo, became the first club to generate more than 400 million euros of revenue in 2008-09.

Canon’s HF20 and HF200 models differ in their color and the memory configuration. HP200 has none where as the HF20 has built in memory of 32GB. These models are somewhat smaller and less commanding than their twin brothers HF S100 and HF S10. But they offer a bodily smaller but comparatively longer 15x zooming lens with lower resolution of 4 mega pixel sensor. Al though, they support most of the features like their brothers, still they lack zebra stripes, manual control dialing, and color bars. These models are costlier than the Panasonic’s HC-TM20/SD20 and HDR-CX100. Like other models of Canon, these camcorders are deficient of an eye level EVF.
HF200 being a midrange camcorder weighs 13.9 ounces. It measures 2.8 x 2.4 x 4.9 inches and it can be comfortably fit into the jacket’s pocket except with little bulging at the sides. Gripping is very much easy that makes using of this camcorder comfortable. Buttons like zoom rocker and photo button falls just beneath your forefinger. They are slightly raised than the normal levels. The button function pulls up the most often used settings and the full menu system to the next level down. Along with the options like image effects, white balance, video quality, digital effects, program, still photo size with a pretty number of scene modes it also offers aperture priority shooting modes and real shutter with a shutter speed varying between 1/8 to 1/2000 sec where as the aperture options ranges from f1.8 to f8.
HF200 also supports one more mode known as the ‘Canon’s Cine mode’ to adjust color and gamma to set it 24F progressive modes. You can also set drive modes and metering in this camcorder. Three other features can be accessed by means of the menus, are variable zoom speed, fixed zoom speed and x.v.color mode.
While shooting, navigation down with the help of joystick triggers a menu that flies up helps to activate the digital effects, video light, backlight and compensation, 3 second prerecord, mic level, manual focus and face detection. You can’t pre-record while shooting in still mode but you can get flash there. Because of the low resolution display of the 2.7 inches display, the pixilations look very small and sometimes become hard to look at it. But it looks good at bright sunlight.
HF200 comes with features such as 4 second clips used for creating a ‘highlights reel’ effect and Video Snapshots. Though it is of useful one but seems to be a bit annoying thing. In the LCD recess, you need to press a very hard button for entering the Video Snapshot mode. As soon as you press the hard button, a blue color outline appears on the display screen. Then you need to press ‘record’ that results in the traveling of the highlight around the blue color outline that counts 4 seconds. It will be in Video Snapshot mode until and unless you again switch back to the playback model by pressing the same button once again.
Quality and performance is excellent at both 17Mbps and 24Mbps bit rate. The best part of this camcorder is that it focuses accurately and quickly even in low light conditions. It can be alive up to 1.5 hours if its battery is fully charged and also high quality batteries are introduced by Canon for the purpose of magnifying the battery life of the camcorders. Unfortunately, it does not offer quick charging.
The small lens of the camcorder generates excellent videos with saturated colors and excellent exposures. The dynamic range can be maximized by DigicDV 3 processing. The audio quality is also good except there is a tendency of microphone to catch up few wind noise along with the sound. Also, they lack fringing especially while shooting brightly exposed objects.
Overall, HF200 is good to take still photos, which can place a quite good competition in the market with bit high cost. Also, Canon is offering lot more useful features in this camcorder when compared to the other high end models like HF S100 and S10.
We review Canon's new Vixia HF S20 camcorder which tries to improve upon near perfection from its predecessor the HF S10.
Introduction
We typically don’t test pre-production models, but when Canon offered one of the few samples in the U.S. of its soon-to-be-released top-of-the-line camcorders, we couldn’t resist. After all, this is the updated version of our 2009 Editor’s Choice pick, the HF S10, which remains one of the best we’ve ever used with dynamite video and high-quality stills. Here, the basic innards remain the same, but the key differences are a larger LCD, two SD Card slots instead of one and a new iPhone-inspired touch menu system. Let’s see if this remains an Editor’s Choice-grade offering.
Features and Design
Place the HF S20 next to the S10 and you’d have to do a double take to see any major differences. They’re there, however. The camcorders are stealthy looking, dressed in black, with only a few logos marring the surfaces, and the overall aesthetic is sophisticated, matching the built-in technology. The HF S20 measures 3” wide, 2.9” high and 5.5” deep – mere tenths larger than the S10. Weight for both is 1.1 pounds with battery and card.
There really isn’t much difference spec-wise. Both units have 10x zoom lenses, 8.59-megapixel CMOS sensors, take 1920×1080 video at 24 Mbps and can snap 8MP native resolution stills. What really sets the two models apart though are the LCD and the way you interact with it. The HF S20 has a beautiful 3.5” screen rated 922K pixels versus a 2.7” 211K LCD on the older edition. That screen had a small joystick to move through the menu system (which we liked). However, the HF S20 has embraced the iPhone’s preferred mode of input, and you now use the touchscreen to make your adjustments with swipes and taps. We found it to be fairly responsive with extremely legible menus. It’s beautifully done overall, and Canon gets a tip of the hat for this new design, although nothing beats the accuracy of the joystick (it may not be as cool, but it works!). Mind you, the HF S10 had a mode dial to switch between video/still; this is also gone and you now control everything via the touch screen. As noted earlier, the camcorder accepts two SD cards, but surprisingly not the new SDXC format found on Canon’s inexpensive digicams. Go figure.
Other features of note include an improved optical image stabilization system, pop-up flash with mini video light next to it and a few operational issues we’ll get into shortly.

PMA 2010: Sony bosses are ‘pushing’ the company to produce a 3D digital camera, according to Masashi ‘Tiger’ Imamura President of Sony’s Personal Imaging and Sound Business group.
In an exclusive interview with dpreview.com, Mr Imamura admitted that 3D imaging is an area into which Sony is keen to expand. Following Hollywood's recent push for 3D movies and Fujifilm’s innovative digital 3D still camera, the Real 3D W1, Mr Imamura told us that his bosses keen to create a similar 3D imaging device.
In a wide-ranging interview, Mr Imamura also told us that the company’s relationship with Carl Zeiss will extend to lenses designed for the mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, unveiled at this year’s PMA. However, he refused to be drawn on details of the upcoming camera’s specification, beyond what has already been made public.
Asked whether Sony sees mirrorless stills cameras as the future, Mr Imamura deflected the question, stating simply that Sony will use whatever technology it has at its disposal to fulfill the needs of its customers.

Tell me a little about your background, your education and how you got into shooting professional photos?
I started out directing music videos, and then I took a photo that became really well known. I didn't know anything about photography at the time; I had just taken this one photo. I didn't even own a camera, my roommate was the photographer. Then all of a sudden, people started asking me to take their picture, and I said 'Ok.' I took a couple others and then celebrities started hitting me up, and I was like 'Alright.' These were actors that I didn't know or didn't know who they were and didn't realize it was a big deal, so I just started shooting people and it just started snowballing. I didn't have any training; I had just taught myself. And my shoots are definitely conducted in a very different way, I think that's what people enjoy so much, and that's why they continue to come back, and they tell their friends and it kinda becomes a story for them. Like, 'This is what I did, this is what I'm a part of, you should be a part too,' and it just snowballed like that.
What makes your shoots go differently? Tell me about a basic shoot for you.
Basically, 95% of my shoots happen at night. And generally someone will hit me up and say, 'Ok, I want to shoot.' Take Quinto, for instance. The first time I shot Zach, we had been friends, we'd hung out. He said to me 'lets shoot,' I was like 'Perfect, I'll pick you up at 10:30 at night,' so I went and picked him up and I had my crew with me and we broke into a bridge that was being built. We climbed around, we shot all through the bridge, and he was like 'Whoa, I've never done anything like this before.' So we shot there for a while, we jumped around; we hopped on some trains and rode around for a while. It was just interesting, it was very 'We're going to do this and then we're going to do this.' So we did that and then we came back to my house. On the way back, I had some people pick up some milk, and the milk shoot was born that way. And before, he didn't know anything; he didn't know what we were going to do at all. He just knew that we were going on an adventure and that's what it was going to be. And it all just ensued from my mind, and I just let it go. I try not to tell them anything beforehand, especially the first time I shoot someone, because I really like reaction, ya know? And after the first time I shot him he said to me, 'I've never done anything like this before, I can imagine you hear that every time.'
You mentioned earlier that you shoot a lot of your friends, are a lot of these personal projects or commissioned work?
Most of it is people come to me. You know I'm doing the book 'The Dirty Side of Glamour'? A lot of people say to me 'Oh, I'd love to be in the book,' then they come to me and what will happen is I have these shots that I'm going to use for the book and a lot of times magazines will purchase the other shots from me. So basically, I shoot whoever I want, however I want, and they have the option to buy or use some of the photos and the rest I use for the book.
So that sounds like a pretty ideal, photographic life. (Laughs)
(Laughs) Yeah, pretty much.
Do you do commissioned work though? Like shooting portraits specifically in your style for assignments?
Totally. I will do that, and sometimes magazines or whoever will hire me straight out to do something and I'll totally do that. A lot of the times though, it's literally referrals that get me work. And you know people that I've shot will introduce me to somebody who will want their photo taken, like Zach or Hayden. We were at his house hanging out and she was like, 'Oh, let's go back and shoot right now.' and that was around 1 o'clock in the morning. And it's really interesting because people want to be a part of it because it's different. And they were really excited to be involved with it. They enjoy the process of it.
Night Art Photography
I made some shots in the last days – please tell me what they tell you:
Fotoentwicklung Tell me if you like them – i love to discuss the photos with you!
The birth of a family's first child is an event of such significance that most parents will want to document as much of that time as possible. Maternity photography is an ideal way to capture the magic of that momentous event. Maternity portraits are a wonderful addition to any baby album and parents should try to include at least one set in the chronicle of their first born's life. There are, however, several points to consider and keep in mind when preparing for maternity portraits.
Timing
When planning your maternity photography session, its best to try and schedule the shoot between week thirty-one and thirty-six. If this is not convenient it's wise to keep your photographer constantly updated with your plans so that you can set the shoot up at short notice. You don't want to lose the optimal window of opportunity! Maternity photography sessions are not easily re-scheduled if missed due to the nature of birth.
General Preparation
When planning maternity photography there are several points that need to be prearranged to ensure a smooth and stress free session for the best memorable maternity portraits. Many parents want at least a couple of family photos included in the maternity portrait session. Everyone involved such as grandparents and close friends need to be included in all phases of the planning to avoid any additional stress on the day of the session.
The parents and maternity photographer should discuss the overall style of the maternity portraits thoroughly in the initial stages of planning. This normally happens during your pre-consultation. Points such as photographic style, sets and props, clothing and group details should be decided on early in the process. Stress free maternity photography has been mentioned several times here and is an extremely important point. It's important that everyone be as relaxed and calm as possible to ensure a serene and relaxing ambiance for the photo session.
Maternity Photography Planning Specifics
1. Clothing
Deciding on clothing is a critical part of the maternity photography planning process. Many mothers want to pose topless or nude and they need to discuss this with the photographer early to establish their willingness to shoot a nude shoot. However, nude maternity shoots are pretty common nowadays. Clothing also plays a role in the photographer's preparation for the maternity portrait session.
2. Maternity Photography Props
With maternity photography props can be add and can add significantly to the overall feel of the results or distract. Toys, items of clothing, baby furniture and accessories all make great additions to the session. If you want more of a lifestyle session then most likely you'll forgo the usual props so that main focus is on you.
If you do decide to go with a more traditional maternity photography session, most maternity photographers usually have various maternity photography props available.
3. Maternity Photography Setting
There are usually two locations chosen for maternity photography. A studio environment or the home. Studios are usually used where a more traditional style of maternity photography is desired. The photographer is responsible for the setup for the maternity portraits and preparing the studio.
The more commonly chosen setting is the home as it lends a far more intimate and familiar feeling. Just be sure that your that the home is prepared for the upcoming shoot. Make sure the baby's room is set up as well. The photographer most likely will want to take a few shoots in the room as well as throughout the home.
The maternity photographer will likely arrive 30 minutes before the session starts to look around and find the best light in the home if they are a natural light (available light) photographer.
Maternity Photography Do's and Dont's
A good photographer will guide everyone smoothly through the maternity photography process, but here are a couple of pointers to keep in mind for the shoot.
- Try and avoid wearing clothes with elastic seams as they leave marks on the skin.
- Avoid trying any new funky hairstyles before your session.
- Avoid using oily lotions on your skin prior to the shoot. They tend to reflect flash and fill lighting and can spoil shots.
- Try and have a manicure prior to the shoot as your hands are often the focal point of many of the photos.
- Lip gloss or moisturizer makes a big difference in close up head and shoulder shots.
- Make arrangements to contain unruly pets during the shoot.
- Avoid wear distracting jewelery or clothing during the shoot.
- Get the hubby to join you in a few photos. They make for great portraits.
- Relax, have fun and trust your photographer!
This may all sound like maternity photography is a nightmare, but when you consider the value of maternity portraits the preparation is well worth it, and you'll have amazing maternity portraits to share with the new edition to the family.

Good wildlife safari photography is not only about composition and camera equipment because you first need to find your subjects before you can even lift your camera.
This best five African wildlife destinations list helps you do that.
Once you have been going on wildlife photography safaris in Africa for a number of years you begin to realise and recognise that certain areas are better than others for generating good animal picture opportunities on a consistent basis.
The ranking is based on over twenty years of my safari photography experience, forums, countless trip reports and travel journals, travel magazines and prevailing wisdom in the Africa travel industry.
1. Serengeti NP – Tanzania
One of the best safari parks in Africa bar none, the Serengeti is a safari photography dream destination.
The wildlife viewing on a photographic safari here often borders on the spectacular aided by the fact that the vegetation is predomi
nantly grassland which makes spotting animals from a distance considerably easier and provides less obstacles like bushes and trees to obscure your subjects.
The grassland is also able to sustain a multitude of herbivores like wildebeest, zebra and gazelle which in turn sustains a large population of predators to feed on them so it’s no surprise that the Serengeti is often referred to as “big cat central”. In the Masaai language Serengeti means “endless plain” which is very close to the truth.
Two extraordinary events occur here that make it an even more remarkable place to take a Tanzania safari. The annual wildebeest migration and the birth of hundreds of thousands of wildebeest foals.
The migration occurs as the massive herds of up to a million individuals begin their search for better grazing by moving north. The exact timing is dependant on the seasonal rains but they travel across the Serengeti en masse roughly between April and August.
In
February – March, months before they begin their epic journey, the wildebeest give birth within a six week period to hundreds of thousands of calves, taking advantage of the sweet grazing available in the Serengeti at that time. They all foal at the same time to cause a glut of prey opportunities for the predators who make full use of the bonanza while they can.
And so can you with some remarkable picture opportunities in the offing.
2. Masai Mara Reserve – Kenya
This is one of the places where your camera will start steaming from overuse especially if you are after big cat pictures.
Along with the Serengeti in Tanzania, this is without a doubt the premier game viewing destination in Africa because of the quality and quantity of wildlife sightings and safari photography opportunities to be found here.
This sometimes works against it because in certain places it can be overrun with photographers and tourist in safari vehicles all jost
ling for the best position around a bemused lion pride or leopard in a tree.
But if predators are what you seek from a safari photography trip then this reserve will deliver them in spades in the form of lion, cheetah, hyena and even regular leopard sightings if you know the right areas.
Taking a hot air balloon ride over the plains will provide a unique perspective for your safari photography efforts not to mention an amazing experience.
3. Kruger NP – South Africa
The Kruger National Park has to rank as one of the best South Africa safari photography destinations, only slightly behind the Masai Mara and Serengeti when it comes to wildlife viewing because the vegetation in Kruger can be dense and sometimes mars the ability to see longer distances and get clear wildlife pictures.
But the variety of animals, birds and ecosystems that you can experience here are unparalleled anywhere else in Africa and the accommodation, roads and fac
ilities are top notch and all at a very affordable price.
It’s not unusual to see lion, leopard, cheetah, a pack of wild dog, rhino, elephant, buffalo and a whole host of antelope, crocodile and hippo in the course of a single trip including a variety of insects and reptiles.
On the bird front you will be spoiled with a seemingly never-ending supply of eagles, hawks, water birds and a host of migratory and indigenous species to the tune of about 510 different varieties.
You can easily do a self drive safari photography holiday here and still see a decent amount of wildlife especially if you stick to the central and southern portions of this massive park (larger than Ireland). The north has fewer animals due to dryer conditions but also less tourists which makes for a more isolated and intimate wildlife experience.
4. Okavango Delta and Moremi GR – Botswana
The Okavango Delta must qualify as the most unique and varied safari area in A
frica and photographs of the landscape here are almost as prized as the wildlife pictures themselves.
The delta lies in the North of Botswana and it consists of narrow water channels lined by papyrus, floodplains covered knee deep in water, hippo filled lagoons, forest glades and savannah grassland.
You can go on outstanding safari photography expeditions here on foot, using a 4×4 vehicle, a mokoro (dug-out canoe) or a motorised boat.
Vast herds of buffalo, elephant, gazelle and zebra roam this rich ecosystem which is fed by the Okavango river which has its source in the Angolan highlands and floods the delta every year.
This treasure trove of available prey attracts the predators too and lion, leopard, cheetah and wild dog thrive here. The dry season is the best for game viewing because the animals are drawn to the permanent water sources.
The Moremi game reserve consists of strictly controlled, privately managed concessions and it falls w
ithin the Okavango delta area and has no fences which leaves the animals free to roam around as they please.
There are a number of upmarket Botswana safari lodges in Moremi such as the Vumbura concession which contains both wetland and savannah areas for the best of both worlds.
The Delta is at its most impressive in August when the water is at its deepest and most of the young are born between November and March when the vegetation is lush and dense so it might be a good idea to plan any Botswana safari photography trips to coincide with these events.
5. South and North Luangwa NP – Zambia
Some experts have branded the Luangwa National Park as one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world because the density of game you can find here mixed with the isolation and pure unadulterated wildness of it is almost without compare.
Because it is reasonably undiscovered except to the locals in the know and a select few foreign visitor
s, it hasn’t been overrun by masses of tourists yet and you can experience a safari photography vacation here as it should be and some say that is the best Africa has to offer.
There are over 60 species of animal here with the unfortunate exception of rhino because they were poached into extinction and over 400 different kinds of birds.
They all rely on and are drawn to the winding Luangwa river which is crowded with some of the biggest concentrations of hippo and crocodile you will find anywhere in Africa. it has been estimated that there are 50 hippos per kilometre of this congested river.
The South Luangwa was the birthplace of the walking safari and it is still a very popular way to explore the area from a quality collection of safari lodges and camps. Night drives are another excellent way to see leopard which are reputed to be more regularly seen in this park than anywhere else in Africa because of the high concentrations of the predator. Lions an
d even rare sightings like honey badger, civet and wild dog are likely to be seen.
To take the true Zambia safari photography adventure a step farther, the northern luangwa area is even more remote, wild and isolated than the south and the wildlife and bird viewing experience is from the top draw. Definitely one for the safari cognoscenti.

Rule #1: Composition
Composition carries a lot of baggage. I’m going to make it simple and narrow it down to a few aspects I consider important.
Portraits and headroom: One of the most common mistakes I see photographers make is the misuse of headroom.
The bottom line is, don’t leave a lot of space between the top of the subject’s head and the top of the frame. Avoid the tendency to put faces square in the middle of your viewfinder where your focus brackets may be.
In order to capture the emotions of the face, start by getting in as close as you can. At times you may even chop off the tops of a few heads. Unless the sky is particularly amazing or the trees more fantastic than your average set of trees, don’t try and force getting the surroundings into your image. Generally the background should not be more prominent than the subject.
Right are two family portraits I shot. The image I gave the client has minimal dead space above the head and is cropped in so you can really see the emotions in their face. The other has too much background.
Candids and framing: If you’re a wedding photographer or photo-journalist, you’ll find yourself trying to get balanced pictures that seem polished, but in fact were taken quickly. In these situations, you can’t pause the action to create nice compositions. Not being in control of the environment, you must always scan your surroundings and move your feet in order to frame your images in interesting ways.
Try to find lines that will draw the eye to the subject. Use windows and doorframes, pews, people and even occasionally swords. Not too long ago I helped shoot a military wedding and was able to get some nice compositions using these techniques. As the couple left the chapel I noticed their silhouette nicely framed by the door and fired off a few shots. Adding some contrast and a B&W filter, exaggerated the effect. The other image with the traditional military arch set itself up for a nice composition. I just made sure I was behind and inside the doorway to get the right framing.
Through the distorting glass: Use your lens to distort relative sizes and perspectives. Most commonly, I use my wide-angle lens to essentially blow-up the things closest to me as the photographer.
A typical shot shown below is with the larger-than-life bride’s bouquet. I usually crouch low below the bride and have her point her flowers right into the lens. Don’t be afraid to tuck the subject away in the corner of the frame and even have them out of focus.
There will be plenty of other standard shots; these are the creative fun ones. The other example shown here uses the wide angle to exaggerate the length of the couple’s vintage ride. It’s often a pain to constantly switch lenses. Try keeping your wide glass mounted on a second camera or with a second photographer.
Note: It doesn’t all have to be done at the time of shooting. In post-production, start experimenting with the crop and straighten tools. Most image editing packages are non-destructive so try a few versions of an image and then get a second opinion.

I taken Photos in the last days – please tell me if you think they are good:
more Tell me if you like them – i love to discuss the photos with you!
San Simeon, California, well known as home of Hearst Castle, has more going for it than just as a one-stop layover to see the monumental residence of an American publishing icon.
From a base-camp at the Orchid Inn just off California 1, anyone with no more than a point-and-shoot camera and an average eye for scenery can capture world class images in just one day roaming the 30-mile scenic-rich stretch of the golden state's Central Coast.
Head south for breakfast or brunch along Morro Bay's wharf, but don't let the often persistent morning overcast daunt you. With photogenic fame that rivals Hearst Castle, Morro Rock looms over the harbor area and a cap of mist, cloud or fog adds visual drama as a massive background to colorful fishing boats, kayakers and the ever-present seabirds that make the estuary their home. Tides and other factors govern the departure and arrivals of the fishermen, so check around to see when the wharf shows the most activity. On weekends and in the summer months, tourists flood the area, possibly dominating your foreground. A small inconvenience for great seaside pictures of marine life and activity.
After brunch at any of several restaurants in the marina area, drive north along California 1 to the little town of Harmony, population 18. The pottery shop and a nearby winery maintain regular hours but a restaurant behind the post office can be hit or miss. Whether you stop to shop, sip wine or eat, check out the interplay of light and shadows on the various doors and windows of the three main buildings in Harmony: the old creamery's loading dock, the chapel at the rear and a commercial building across the little main street in the town. A vintage and long unused truck contrasts with a sign proclaiming some of the things people used to do in the sparsely populated town where William Randolph Hearst stopped en route to San Simeon for dairy products.
Cambria, artistic and commercial nerve-center for the area, has a world-class collection of restaurants, galleries and other shops that represent great focal points for pictures of the family browsing and interacting with local merchants. Cambria affords a wealth of opportunities for you to take the traditional point and click photo of the family or friends. Linger in the town as long as you want, but save time for sunset shots along the coast at any of several turnouts along the Cabrillo Highway.
What would a seaside picture be without a lighthouse? The old lighthouse at Peidras Blancas sits 15 miles north of San Simeon on a rugged point that juts into the ocean. Authorities limit access to many working lighthouses along the California coast and if seeing the inner workings of these venerable sentinels captivates you, better structures exist elsewhere. Besides, parts of the original cab from the Piedras Blancas lighthouse sit on prominent display in Cambria, which gives you perhaps a closer look at how engineers designed the light element and its relationship to the Fresnel lens, the two features that create and throw light far out to sea.
But the jagged coast and rocks between the lighthouse and a wide turnout provide you with more than a staging area for sunset shots. Throughout the year, the sun sets either to the right or left of the lighthouse. Weather often rolls in over the top of Piedras Blancas to present you with dramatic sky effects as the sun lowers in and out of late afternoon and early evening clouds and fog banks.
Wildlife lovers know that in late winter sea lions use the many coves and inlets as a spawning ground. Be careful, however. Sea lion bulls, though very large and lumbering move with deceptive speed when angered. Sea otters and harbor seals also live along this stretch of California coast; and at the same during the same season when sea lions mate, whales often transit close to shore in their annual migrations south to calving waters off Mexico before returning north later in the spring. To catch views of migrating whales, you'll need either a long lens on your camera or take one of the charter whale watching excursions out of Morro Bay.
Along California 46, a well-traveled highway that stretches from the coast inland to Paso Robles, you can spot hawks, turkey vultures and other raptors that ride thermals in search of prey. About three miles inland and near where the road crosses over the summit, you'll find two broad turnouts. From either of these parking areas, look south toward Morro Rock and wait for the sun to get low on the horizon for perhaps the most dramatic panoramic shot you'll take on your one-day photo odyssey. With the camera set for telephoto, you can squeeze family, friends or even yourself into the frame along with the far distant but still visible Morro Rock, a wide swath of coast and even a few of the golden hills that give California its distinctive second name, “The Golden State”.
To round off your photo tour of the Central Coast, take in any of the several wineries that flank California 46 as you approach Paso Robles. The late afternoon sun and always scenic vineyards, not to mention the opportunity to taste wines from some of the up-and-coming wineries in the region, give you a good chance to change your focus from panoramas to local color that includes architecturally unique homes and commercial buildings.
